Classical violinist Nusheen Farahani received her Bachelor’s Degree in Violin Performance from the University of South Carolina under the instruction of Dr. William Terwilliger. While in South Carolina, she performed as a substitute violinist with the South Carolina Philharmonic, Symphony Orchestra Augusta, the Aiken Symphony, the Brevard Philharmonic, Long Bay Symphony, and the Spartanburg Philharmonic.
Additionally, Nusheen was chosen to perform and teach in the Bahamas for outreach concerts as a member of the distinguished Resonance String Quartet. More recently, she has come to the Celtic style, studying with Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas at the Isle of Skye Fiddle Camp in Scotland and soon after won second place in the Scottish Fiddling Competition at the Charleston Scottish Games.
She currently performs with violin and guitar duo, Tavous Music, and with the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra, which are both based in Northern Virginia. Nusheen also teaches strings in Fairfax County and Loudoun County Schools.
Nima Majd began playing music at very young age. His first instrument was cello and then quickly his attention shifted to piano, guitar, and the Persian tar. He played in local music groups (rock, jazz, blues, americana) and went on to study composition at university. Nima then traveled around the country, which eventually led him overseas in 1999 where he signed with an independent label in Paris, and soon recorded his first commercial album.
After touring in Europe, he returned to the states where he continued travelling and playing. A great opportunity was offered to teach music at his father’s school (CPCM) outside D.C., and become re-familiar with the music of his Persian heritage which includes a long history of professional and non-professional musicians.
Nima moved to Nashville where all of the different genres of music he had learned, heard or played began to crystallize. He performed, wrote, recorded, and hosted a monthly event for songwriters from 2011-2015. No stranger to travel, the road led back to Virginia where Nima and Nusheen Farahani formed Tavous Music in 2018. What started as a couple of wedding gigs has been met with a lot of love from all walks of life. Nima is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and composer/songwriter in a variety of genres. The style and substance Tavous Music is creating reflects this and also the belief that music is best experienced live.
